What should your best friend do?

When you don’t know what to do, shifting perspective should be your go-to heuristic.

Imagine your best friend was in the same situation as you.

Then ask:

What should my best friend do in this situation?

This works because we’re better at finding solutions for other people than ourselves.

“Cloning” yourself provides an instant perspective.

For instance, I do a variation of this when I set quarterly goals for my business.

Here I ask:

If someone acquired our business, what should they do to grow our business?

Next time you’re facing a situation, try externalizing it.
